What is Dementia Care?

Dementia covers a range of symptoms, which can include confusion and problems with memory and communication. It is not a disease in itself, rather a set of symptoms accompanying conditions that affect the brain, the most common of which is Alzheimer’s Disease.

Dementia is progressive which means that symptoms are likely to worsen over time. We support people to retain their independence as much as possible, adapting care plans and support as symptoms change.

Our approach to dementia care

Every person that we support is unique, with their own personality, life history, likes, dislikes and skills. Our care focuses on maintaining skills and abilities, rather than focussing on what the person has lost. Our support is focussed on promoting wellbeing and meeting the specific needs of every individual, helping them to feel valued, included and happy.

Norwood Grange is able to accommodate residents with dementia by creating a safe and loving environment given by people who are all trained in Dementia Care and understand how that person could be feeling.

Dementia-friendly environment

Our purpose-built care home is thoughtfully designed to care for people living with dementia. Bedrooms doors feature pictures of each resident to help reduce confusion. Hallways are filled with pictures of the local area in years gone by to help residents to reminisce and prompt conversation.

Tailored activities for residents with dementia

Activities organised by our activities co-ordinator are designed to be multi-sensory, accommodating different conditions of dementia, e.g. textured balls are used during exercises, a variety of smells are incorporated into baking and themed props are incorporated into music sessions.

Activities that are multi-sensory are proven to help those living with dementia by increasing concentration and communication, helping cognitive symptoms and social interactions while stimulating reminiscent therapy.

Norwood Grange achieves this in a number of ways, some of which are cooking workshops, ‘Guess the scent’ games, culture days, along with arts and crafts, Pony Therapy and Music Therapy.
