Resident’s son raises funds to support fun activities at Norwood Grange

During July, Norwood Grange care home was the lucky recipient of just over £2000, after the son of a former resident ran 40 miles from Manchester to Sheffield.

Kevin said his inspiration to do the run came after a tough year when his sister died aged 44 in October 2020 following a heart attack, and then his mother died in November, on what would have been his sister’s birthday. Seeing his mother happy and smiling during her time at Norwood Grange prompted Kevin to arrange the run, in the hope of providing extra funds to arrange the kinds of events and activities that his mum loved.

On his Just giving page, Kevin commented: “My mum lived with Dementia and spent the last year of her life living at Norwood Grange Care Home. During that time I saw her the happiest I have seen her in many years. They treat their residents as if they are one big happy family and all they want is to make them happy. The care my mum received was second to none and I can't thank the home enough for the care they gave her.

Kevin’s run covered 40 miles before ending outside the care home, where staff and residents cheered him on. So far, the money raised has been used to buy some boxing gloves, which the residents have enjoyed using. It was also used to buy some extra drinks for some cocktails at the summer party, where they raised a glass to Kevin and Margaret!

Michelle Ketland, Activities Coordinator at Norwood Grange, commented, “Kevin’s Mum, Margaret, was such a lovely lady. It’s hard to explain to anyone who didn’t know her, but she was always smiling and happy, and we miss her terribly. Whenever Kevin visited, the huge smile on her face was plain to see. The fact that Kevin is raising money for her friends at Norwood is a lovely gesture. So far, we’ve used the money to buy some boxing gloves - an activity that keeps people active and is also a good leave accessible for residents to pick up when they want to, in between more structured events and activities.”

Kevin added, “My mum made friends with staff and residents and had so many opportunities to do the things that she previously enjoyed. Norwood Grange staff are always doing amazing things...and making residents’ wishes come true. I wanted to help support them to make other residents as happy as they made my mum.”

Thank you Kevin, your support will help put smiles on the faces of everyone at Norwood Grange!
